Are We Preaching Cruelty?

When you take a look at our Indian Society you’ll spot holes that will take centuries to fill. Bonded Labor, Khap Panchayat, Honor Killings, the list is simply endless. But the one which simply makes my heart bleeds is Child Labor. I feel very sad when I come across little children below twelve years old working as helpers. My heart bleeds for them. Why? Have we become so heartless and so self-centered that we only think for our comforts?

I stay in a co-operative society where all residents are highly educated professionals. Almost all residents have daily helpers. But the families with little children have kept kid maids who look after their children. All day these baby maids will pamper the toddlers and will go roaming with them in their arms or in prams. The lady of the house will make these maids dress up to look older than their real age, but as soon as you go near to these maids you’ll spot the cleverness and realize that these poor maids are kids themselves. God forbid if the house has a child who is himself/herself around 10 years old, most likely the kid will end up bullying the maid. Many a times these kids are tortured both physically and sexually. Such kind of instances are common, we keep reading about such cases daily in newspapers.

You visit a mall and more often than not you will see young mothers getting down from big cars and following them will be a young maid who’d be trying to balance herself with the weight of the little kid. Mother’s will be busy shopping or bowling while the little maid will be struggling, literally with the problem in hand! This sad state of affairs is not only reserved for females, it is just that these girls more often than not are kept within the four walls of the house and the tortures on them go unnoticed. But look at any roadside dhaba or tea stall, you will see 8-10 year old boys washing utensils and doing small errand work. We openly watch them being tortured and abused by their masters but we ignore it.

Who is responsible for this inhuman behavior? The system has failed to protect the childhood of many such children. The whole society must come together to bring a change. Laws are there but their implementation is the problem. Though it is the duty of the government of impose these laws but why not thrust RWA with the responsibility to keep a check on this menace. We have to transform the society to a place where the rights of all children are protected, irrespective of their age, sex or financial condition.

Education is amongst the first birth rights of every child and it is the responsibility of the society to provide it with this basic right. We need to spread awareness to change our mindsets and provide education to the nation’s children. The society needs to stop being selfish and also think for these little kids.

What are we doing? Are we teaching our very own children the open existence of cruelty in our society? One universal truth is that the society which fails to protect its children will soon break down and perish.

Think about it…

  1. This is indeed true. Another sad case of hypocrisy in the India society, somehow we do not feel that the children of the under privileged deserve the same amount of respect from us.

  2. Pamarty Venkataramana

A true commentary on the sad state of affairs prevailing in our society. Have studied the subject since early days of my law practice to discover that rampant illiteracy and poverty are the causes of this pathetic state .
Farm hands, labourers like tea shop boys who sleep on pavements at night and are woken up in morning ,thrust Iranian chai shop uniforms, and given a livelihood ! Poor illiterate parents ,like rickshaw-pullers have no other recourse to make both ends meet unless the minors are sent as mechanics or helps in domestic household establishments.
Societal mores must be changed . All this transformation is possible only with a radical change in policy of treatment of citizens, irrespective of caste, creed, race. As a necessary first step, an uniform civil code must be ushered in.
Without a sense of nationalist spirit, no amount of policy formulation or social media outrage will have the desired effects!
Human rights are no subject for social talk but real implementation by sincere leaders of aNation!
Childhood is most treasured phase of a nation’s resurgence and needs to be nurtured .
Your incisive article highlights the much needed vision to those desirous of taking over reins of the national government !
Wonderful subject, such children ought to be educated via night schools and weekend free education imparted by educated youth and retired officers of the country.
    Congratulations.
