A Question

AuthorAk Srivastava

I am just posing A Question to all BJP supporters and more particularly to Modi`s supporters with regard to stand taken by the BJP in Lok Sabha on TELANGNA Telanganaissue.
Telangna issue was hanging fire for the last 60 yrs. In the last 10 yes the issue had taken a new height when UPA had promised in its manifesto in 2004 to create the state. Aspirations ran very high when Chandrasekhar Rap, TRS chief joined the UPA government but when found that UPA was evading creation of state walked out of the government, he undertook fast unto death which was broken when again assurance was given. Osmania University students took to streets and paralyzed Hyderabad. Vigorous consultation process was undertaken by UPA with various groups. Justice Srikrishna Commission was set up to consider the issue. The Commission examined all the parties and gave some way out in its report but did not give clear finding that Telangana should be formed. Once the then Home Secretary even announced the decision the formation of state but quickly the steps were retraced. Lot of confusion prevailed till UPA firmly made all its vote bank calculation and came to the conclusion that if state is not formed, it is going to be completely wiped out from Andhra.
When Narendra Modi spoke in Hyderabad rally, he unequivocally supported the cause of Telangana wholeheartedly and lambasted central government from dithering away from the issue.
Jagan Mohan Reddy of YSR Congress, Chandrababu Naidu of TDP and even Chief Minister of A.P. Kiran Reddy started opposing formation of Telangana and pleaded for unified Andhra. Protests, Bandhs and other mode of resentments were resorted in Seemandhra region. Government started preparing to move into the directions.
Andhra Assembly rejected the motion of the President in the Assembly by voice vote.
Now the question is, “Is BJP right in supporting the creation of Telangana.?“BJP have always drawn flak in parliamentary election from South except from Karnataka. Congress was planning to shake hand with TRS in Telangana to corner 17 seats from Telangana region, supporting Chandrasekhar Rao of TRS helping formation of his government in Telangana. Congress also planned to allign with Jagan Mohan Reddy of YSR Congress to corner some seats from Seemandhra region. If BJP had not supported the Bill in Lok Sabha, Congress would have had run away with 100% credit on formation of state. Probably, keeping in view to occupy some space in both regions, BJP supported the move. If on opposition of BJP, Telangana Bill had fallen, still Congress would have painted BJP as villain of peace. In Assembly election too the space would have been filled by Congress. Now when Congress-TRS hold one pole in Assembly election, BJP can take the place of opposition. In Parliamentary election too, all seats may not go to Congress-TRS combinations and BJP may garner some seats from Telangana region as BJP would also gain some sympathy and get some seats.
In Seemandhra region too, BJP is trying to tie up with TDP and contest. In any case, TDP will never align with Congress and YSR Congress and BJP is always a natural ally of TDP.

To my mind, BJP has taken a correct stand to support creation of Telangana and add to its tally some seats from AP. I will be delighted if some BJP supporter educates me if BJP should have taken a contrary stand.

I am not on merits or demerits of demand made by Telangana region orwhether A.P should have remained united.

  2. jee, Bjp will not have any benefit by supporting telengana, dont know why it is supporting. It will loose its vote both in Telangana and seemandhara. When jagan Mohan ready and naidu approached they should have supported them and formed alliance with them. Author explained the issue well.

  3. The process of division and creation of new states is an ongoing process since 50’s.Many new states have been created.Bihar’s bifercation was the worst one leaving Bihar in a poor state of growth.Bihar’s growth was lopsided as Sothern Bihar which is Jharkhand now,had all mines, minerals, forests and Heavy Industries. On bifercation,Bihar is only a agriculture based state with the curse of flood every year.My focus was not that.
In fact my focus was on the strategy adopted by BJP in supporting the Bill.

  4. I personally don’t support this Division for a simple reason, that other states are also in queue for the same. e.g. Maharashtra/Vidharba, UP to be in four pieces, etc. etc…… These silly divisions will not only divide people but also politics of the governments. Our country may not be able to get a Majority Central Government ever…..The people and our nation will only left in Chaos…..

India should forget everything and strive for Growth, Development, well being of its own people, etc etc……and We should feel proud as INDIANS and ONLY INDIANS…….and nothing else…….

  5. In fact, the decision was driven by electoral considerations. It is doubtful that TDP was not informed. As per Mr. Naidu he was sitting with Sri Advani when the discussion started. BJP played its cards well. One assured thing in the minds of BJP is that the bill will face serious legal hurdles as they are sure Constitution must be amended. You can read Art. 371D after 32nd amendment to Constitution. It was AP specific. If state is divided the article in the constitution will have to be amended. And the common capital concept is ambiguous.

So, if courts annul provisions of bill and state formation is stalled BJP can say we supported TG and also asked Congress/TRS for amendment. that will seal their fate forever. Game plan is good. result we have to see.

    1. 2. Our Constitution is a complex document which need intervention bythe Suoreme Court.May be A.P.Reorganisation Act may also require intervention but Court’s endevour have always been to uphold the Act by synchronising, severing some unconstitutional part or readingdown some part.
My emphasis was that when bifercation has been forced,no doubt the motivation of UPA is on vote bank in Telangana, should have BJP opposed the bifercation or to carve out some space for itself.BJP is also playing its card keeping the vote bank politics.

  6. Well, a very complex situation. I do not think there is any straightforward answer to this. An ideal comparison is to the case when a Joint Family starts breaking up. The conflict arises from bullying or persecution and later takes a color of revolt. The combination of greed and a false sense of independence overlooking the precept of Strength in Unity ( refer Panchatantra Tale) gives rise to the internecine feud which finally explodes to the public domain and ends up in judicial captivity. This has been the story line so far. As onlookers we can only say that they are not only weakening their own ‘Well” but also contaminating the mindset of the other equally greedy and manipulative forces in the country.

    1. No doubt, the process of bifercation of A.P.was started by UPA in 2004 keeping an eye on Vote bank.It had the apprehension that if Telangana is not created,it us going to be wiped out completely.
You will recall, when NDA was in power,U.P.,Bihar and M.P.were bifercated in such a congenial and friendly manner that there was no ruckus seen then which is visible today.

  7. Author has written the whole history of Telangna which is correct but I don’t have much knowledge what is write nd what is wrong.Think don’t have right to comment but AKSir has given clear view.

    1. Thank you very much.UPA is forcing bifercation of A.P.with vote bsnk politics and BJP is taking a stand not to allow Congress 100% advantage.
