Just A Minute

1Reflections are mirror images of thoughts. Musing aloud becomes a necessary exercise come election season. The common notion is that it is a periodical review of aspiring candidates which is erroneous to say the least. The Constitutional machinery is geared up to help evaluate and assess the growth – quotient of the electorate , i.e, the people of the nation ; not of the contesting parties either!

How mature has a society grown since the last set of peoples’ representatives were voted to seats of decision-making ? How effective have their policies been and was the incumbent administration capable of good governance ? Which means not merely the law and order situation in the nooks and corners of a plural society but also the extent and degree of comfort-level enjoyed with neighbouring countries and distant Governments around the globe.

Today, in our land ,we have been witnessing a cauldron of ideas , pot pouri of policies with a mixed method of online cum off shore campaigning occupying the place of pride among tech-savvy newbie voter community . Political donations have become so fashionable that business houses no longer shy in hobnobbing or sponsoring mega -rallies and road-shows ,in full attendance by media channels of publicity. It is no longer a sponsored cricket match or some other sporting event which hogs the bytes and ad revenue on television screens but all the jibes and counter-allegations , peppered by choicest abuses which colour the life of a television -viewer or the average voter whose life revolves around debating the relative merits and demerits of aspirants . Is that a blessing in disguise ?

Well, in a way if is for all these deep thinkers and vociferous debaters forget their real life woes momentarily and their zest to live adds years to the lifespan. Mortality rated figures turn pinkish and successor governments will be bandying about the good life being provided under the helm of it’s Cabinet . Animosities too surface with acrimonious debates turning violent amongst the followers than the candidates putted against each other. Rumour-mongers thrive as idle minds indulge overtime in gossip and conspiracy-theories. The extended voting pattern adopted by the Election Commission definitely lends a festive atmosphere all around the length and breadth of the country. Caretaker governments engage themselves in last-minute window-dressing and generously use the paper-shredder machines ,one hears!

So, the moot point is – are we a matured democracy ? Are the voters grown -up minds?

We, the people are no longer nomads of an inherited , much abused system. Awareness has grown by leaps and bounds . No longer do voters fight in the bane of caste, creed or gender . No more does religion hold sway as the voter steps into the polling booth . Manifestos are not like movie-trailers and become signature tunes of the parties vying with one another , more focused on funds-management than people-management!

So, hear ye, All Voters! Stop a minute to ponder on the good conscience factor before you stoop to press the button of your liking on the electronic voting machine .

Just a minute … Just one vote .

Avoid recounting as you recount the recounting -ministers of yore!

Vote Right My Dear Country .

Jai hind!
