Real Empowerment of India

woman-EMPOWERMENT

Indian history books and articles speak on women’s empowerment, our rich heritage and enlightened societies of the past, where women were treated as equals. But the truth is that in modern India, women are treated as second grade citizens.
In India, gender discrimination starts from the family.  Families expects a woman to deliver a boy child, if not she is humiliated, tortured and sent to her parents house. Birth of a boy child brings joy to the family. There were so many abortions done after finding that it is a girl foetus detected through CT scan. After this government brought strict law “determination of sex of the foetus is a crime”. In villages if a girl child is born, its family kills that child by giving poison!
Brutal gang rapes occur frequently in a state that was headed by a women CM.  Gender discrimination is not realized by women themselves. India is the 4th dangerous country in the world for women. Domestic violence, acid attacks, gang rapes, dowry harassment happen in India. If a woman undergoes physical violence or mental torture, dowry harassment from her husband or husband’s family, the girl’s parents advise her to adjust and live with them. They even say it is very normal for a woman to undergo such things because we are born as a woman. At any cost we should not leave the institution of marriage and be a burden to the girl’s parents. This basic mentality of the girl’s parents must be changed.
Women are either subordinate or dependent to her father or husband for everything. The simplest solution is to create an environment where women can take their independent decisions on their personal development and to be treated as equals instead of raising eyebrows if she wants to achieve in life. This can be achieved only through a correct path for the empowerment of women.
India has grown as super power country but the ill treatment of the women has not stopped. Where education is concerned the gap between women and men is severe. 82.4% of adult men are educated whereas only 65.46% of women are literates in India.  Women emancipation can be achieved only through education, they need not be in the mercy of their father or husband. She has to know this is not the way of life. Even norms of our culture should change.
Women empowerment is the hot topic in India spoken by everyone with no real solution. Women should get equal job opportunities. We are raising slogans and noise about 35% reservation for job but still we have not succeeded. To achieve women empowerment there needs to be vast change in the mindset of not only women but also with men. Men should support women in their growth instead of discouraging them. The first hurdle to women empowerment is within the family,  and this needs to be change. Men have to wake up to the world which is moving towards equality of women.

Swamy Vivekananda has said let woman and people achieve education! All further questions of their fate, they would themselves be competent to settle. Woman must rise, in capacity, not fall. In his own words, he only said, “Awake! Awake!” plans grow and work themselves”. He knew of no reason why it should be impossible to any woman by strong and simple character and intellect, and uprightness of living-to make herself a vehicle of highest ideals.

The best thermometer to the progress of a nation is its treatment of its women“- Swamy Vivekananda

  1. I congratulate Janani Amma for writing this articulate and bringing to the fore a burning issue of the society.Empowerment of women are necessary for overall development of the society.Women are very core if the society and their empowerment will come through proper educatiin to them.Thank you Amma for your effort.

  2. Nicely written by the author who has kept herself truly faithful to the reality of the situation. The article does not attempt to trace causes that has made it to this sorry state. Also causes such as why a son & not a daughter is insisted and the reason for such craving between now & say 2000 years ago.

What is women empowerment has not been explained and how this empowerment can really solve on all points of contentions from infanticide, dowry, domestic violence, divorce, equal opportunity etc etc. At best this article reveals the pathetic plight of women at the present moment in our society.

I suggest the author to do a painstaking research into historical roots of the problem, the condition of women in ancient India before the problem started creeping up and the causes of its breakdown. In otherwords if women had lived fully respected and completely satisfied in those bygone days then there could be attempt to trace back to such exalted life as a solution to the problem. If past had been portrayed as one of oppression of women from the beginning of time then greater research is needed to find out why it has always been so and the justification for it. I tend to think this is not the case and the author can prove me wrong by her research. In any case, if women never enjoyed fair treatment then the earth shaking era of women empowerment would be a revolutionary idea but then the burden of proving that it would no renege to the old ways would remain in the hands of the author.

It is a good beginning to cognize a problem. It prompts far greater research!

Yugvani is doing omen job by providing a platform for budding bloggers.

  10. Your first attempt at blogging has been superlatively successful. This does not mean there are no shortcomings. I think as time goes by and you blog more you will be a super blogger.

Your language has been simple and effective. A few errors here and there need correction. This happens because we try to post the blog without reviewing/editing it. Please read any number of times before you post. You will find the errors. For example, “Families expects” should read as “families expect”. You know this. Only thing is you should read it a hundred times before you post.

You covered most points. While blogging see that you start with what happened in the past like Sati, widow remarriage etc., and how men only fought the injustice. It will be balanced then and you can advise present day men top emulate the pioneers.

Hearty congratulations. And I wish you best of luck in future.

    1. I also committed an error as I did not read my comment a second time. Instead of “to” I typed “top”. These errors can be avoided if we reread.

    2. Thank you very much sir for your valuable comment
