Myth of Myths

Myth of Myths

By Pamarty Venkataramana

Life is a ‘mithya‘ or ‘the unreal’ according to ancient Indian philosophy amply reflected in the belief of a rebirth of the ‘person’ as soon as soul escapes the mortal body of a ‘deceased’.

This view reinforces the need to lead a life of righteousness and as per code of virtuous living laid down by customary practices, traditional habits and set of beliefs.

For, unless one has a positive balance in the ultimate ‘balance-sheet of acts, deeds, actions, thoughts and behavioural aspects’, the soul would not be elevated to an exalted position in the next birth, following the current lifespan.

In fact, if the negativity outweighs positive side on stock being taken (at point of demise), soul would be consigned to enter a lesser being, be it a dog on the streets or an insect or crow : any which creature or life-form, dependent upon and directly proportional to the accumulated ‘karma’ (a sum total of all said deeds, acts, actions, etc.).

Only the most honest, righteous souls would become blessed to merge into the Almighty Supreme! That ‘home-coming’ would be called in English as ‘salvation’, ‘enlightenment’ or ‘nirvana’ – closest, if loose, terminology, to interpret the Sanskrit original word : ‘moksha’ ..

Those who are biased or unaware of this deeply spiritual and highly universal religious system of values, beliefs and philosophies of Hinduism (the world’s oldest, most ancient religious system which worships Nature, as distinct from ‘idolatry’ or ‘pagan-worship’) may slip into quicksand – territory of ‘scepticism’ or outright ‘cynicism’ and ‘ criticize these time-tested, highly intellectual thought-systems.

A question simplicitier that stumps them all, of course, is-‘ why do you bury a corpse and pray for the soul to rest in peace, after it is dead and gone’ .. Oh, the ore, wrath, anger, protestations and discomfort witnessed in response evidences the inner conscience prodding them to think on the authenticity and irreversible proof of Hinduism’s Dharma & Karma planks of religion.

True.

Man is the highest form of evolved life brings on surface of the planet Earth.

Scientific studies too propound the Darwinian theory of evolution of mankind to corroborate the Dashavatara of Hinduism. How life began from the predominant water bodies to the man over beast mentality to virtuous Lord Sri Rama to master of Statecraft Lord Sri Krishna to good governance ,is all well depicted in the mythological stories of Lord Sri Maha Vishnu, the Protector. Lord Brahma, the Creator presides. Lord Maheswara is acknowledged as Destroyer of evil. This Trinity concept finds position in later major religions of the world , with their in variations.

Be that as it may, a comparative study of religions, cultures and philosophies along with a concurrent study of languages beginning from Sanskrit, Latin, Greek , Hebrew, Chinese, Swahili and modern day languages led by English clearly establishes the chain of not only DNA links but imprint of the past, long extinct and expired or lapsed psyche cum cultural ethos being carried on in subsequent generations of humans.

The Yugas were known by fixed measure and the ongoing phase of a Kaliyuga, is bound to be riddled with rift, strife, discord, battles and quarrelsome era of societal governance systems. Discontentment and discord rule roost. Battle of the honest ones would be a constant struggle, pitted against lesser mortals placed in higher positions of power and control.

A Nostradamus is known to the western world.

They have not heard of Veera Brahmam from the southern India state of Andhrapradesh, who has prophecies of greater accuracy to his credit. Ancient India had innumerable saints endowed with all such higher powers of prediction, vision and clairvoyant disposition, besides the great Seven Sages ( saptarishis ) all of which has almost turned extinct with the gradual erosion of original cultural practices of Yagnas, Meditation, Shlokas, Mantras and erosion of requisite environment of purity, free from pollution and corrupt society .

All the above is driving at a point, viz; that ‘ myth ‘  is the ‘unbelievable but to be believed truths of ages long gone by, in the annals of history, invasions, destruction and demolition of worthy ancient, Indian civilization’ .

Those intoxicated with other bohemian or barbaric lifestyles would dub this as primitive, being primordial or figment of imagination. This is not an attempt to convert the innocents, ignorant or rigid minds at all. But, revolves around the need to believe in myths of governance systems.

For instance. That Gandhiji was the ‘father’ of the nation. Or, that India is one single nation although even after seven decades of being declared as an independent nation, we do have not been able to enact an uniform civil code.

Oh, the list of incongruities goes on. .

To the discerning …

Every institution, as a nation, has men who man those offices structured and devised under a written constitution to engineer the fabric of a blanket-cover for all population. As such, any error in judging court-cases ought not to be labeled as a general failure of the Judiciary . Likewise, corrupt leaders must not result in a whole Government bring a failed one or Legislature and Executive being gross failures.

A recent trend noticed globally, after the emergence of Internet communication, has been a coterie of vested interests that are overtly inimical to the State as a power-organism, commonly averred to as ‘the mainstream – media’. Propaganda has been their tool. Good or bad, they act as saints from the heavens. Unlicensed, unbridled, they scream ‘FoE’ if monitored by agencies of law and cry foul about alleged censorship when reprimanded or censured.

This monster of advanced society must be tamed by its horns. Snip it’s wagging tails, which are many and it’s multifarious hydra-like many heads and faces.

Mythology. Myths. These are real.

As real as life is unreal.

Life, a mithya. Not the myths of institutions created by the people, for the people, of the people governed by these man-created bodies.

Juridical assessees must not be exploited in a selective fashion as discriminating against temples belonging to Hinduism whilst allowing ‘minority’ – religions to be free of Governmental control. Money corrupts and funds received as donations by these organizations of ‘religion’ destroy the pious atmosphere of worship, faith and belief.

These using swords and daggers as a religious prescription are let loose, to do as they wish. The humble calf like ,submissive Hindus are harassed in guise of antiquated laws laid down by outgoing colonial regimes.

Such are the inconsistencies in the concept of ‘one nation; one people’ that even existence of the Nation is reduced to an uncertain query-‘ is it a myth?’ …

No scope for mirth here. Only, timely corrective action. So, Utopian like Sri Rama Rajyam returns to our world…

Yes, life is unreal and impermanent. Therefore, the necessity for few myths.

  1. After reading this reading your article I remember a Hindi poem as below
