The spectre of #AccidentalPrimeMinister dogs this nation since independence.
And, ironically, the accident is always by design:never an accidental incident. Even more weird is the fact that the choice itself is of the one who has been dubbed and widely assumed to be an accident of history.
To understand this ‘dirty film’ psyche of a country that has begun to eulogise statues and relegated worship of forces of Nature to the oblivion, one has to delve deep into that singular incident of history which moulded the shape and destiny of India.
Which one incident set the style as well as tone for such an unbecoming manner of choosing the Prime Minister of the largest people’s democracy?
Rewind memory to the manner in which a person who won only his own vote managed to win over all those who had opted for the only other open contender – Sardar Vallabhai Patel and pushed aside the victor to emerge a winner ,at the end of it all!
Roots of our selection process were such – fragile, virile and virulent!
Then came the unheard story of a certain much-praises man who cane out of a hurried meeting to announce to the outside world of him being nominated as the next Prime Minister of India. Ghosts in the corridors of power whisper that his untimely demise in a foreign land was end result of such a treachery. He too was no accidental prime minister!
Nor was the daughter who was groomed since childhood to don the seat of high priestess an accidental prime minister. Her dislodging was no accident either but caused by a sinister design of a substandard vakil who won a judgment on technical grounds (not on merits) to be made law minister by another accidental Prime Minister. The rest of them were as accidents of fate of this great country as their destiny itself was startling to them – one and all : be it a peasant prime minister or a self proclaimed agriculturist prime minister or bureaucrat prime ministers or a pilot – turned reluctant Prime Minister or a long time ‘family retainer’ minister who became a compromise Prime Minister (although he single handedly carved out a throbbing economic agenda for India like never before dreamt and never after bettered ). Later ones such as a so-proclaimed poet-Prime Minister or the successor babu PM or a totally dark horse chaiwala Prime Minister are also heads of a Government installed by design and not at all through any accident or loophole in the Constitution of India!
The nation itself has a constitutional mandate to exhort and praise a loopholes riddled ‘Book of All’, lest it be viewed as a sacrilege or blasphemy.
The most recent episode of an #AccidentalChiefMinister in southern State of Karnataka is an eye-opener for every innocent citizen who head hung in sighs of resignation and cursing own ‘karma’, bleats praises for such a great Institution as the Election Commission of India playing dumb and remaining a mute witness to the travesty of a poll being conducted in a ‘free and fair manner ‘ .
The most respected Office of His Excellency, the President of India remains as regal and aloof from the ground realities as was the Queen in far off island-country. All things considered, even the first preference votes are cast not by accidental fate or own volition but by design, lobbying and orchestrated campaign of vested interests!
With such a plethora of cases staring up at you, all you critics crying foul over the term -‘ Accidental Prime Minister ‘ should perhaps accept a more valid if milder sounding adage . The #Occidental Puppet !
