India Dares Goddess of Meanest Things

India dares Goddess of meanest things

The Goddess of meanest things strikes again. But this time she has chosen the most unlikely target Mahatma Gandhi. As she has uncanny ability to strike at the most unimaginable point, so

she has struck on his one of the strongest point “untouchability“.

We may differ with Mahatma Gandhi on many points. But we can’t deny that he was one the greatest person ever born. We can’t deny his contribution in eradicating untouchability. He was foremost personality who stood against untouchability. He did that not to be at Page 3 or to get in limelight like the Goddess of meanest things. He did that by his heart. He felt that untouchability is a crime against humanity. In spite of the opposition from contemporary society & from his own family, he deployed himself in cleaning night soil and became champion for Untouchable whom he renamed as “Harijan” Mainly due to his effort, now Dalit have share same space & respect in India as all other have.

As for as Goddess of meanest things, Ms. Arundhati Roy, is concerned, everyone knows her views about India & Indian value. Perhaps she does not like any thing which is India. She is self proclaimed champion of human rights and environmental causes. If you don’t subscribe my views, please see yourself her views & comments on Support for Kashmiri separatismSardar Sarovar Project, Afghanistan, India’s nuclear weaponisation2001 Indian Parliament attackMuthanga incident2008 Mumbai attacksCriticism of Sri Lanka, The NaxalitesSedition chargesCriticism of Anna Hazare and on Narendra Modi.

She is one who always sailed against the wind. She is one of the most vocal lady author & social activist. She has got support from all those who never had high opinion about India & Indians. Medha Patekar, Prashant Bhushan, Gilani including Kashmir’s separatists leaders plus Maoists are her supporters on many issues.

In 2002, Indian Supreme Court issued a contempt notice to Ms. Arundhati Roy, Goddess of Meanest Things. She responded to this notice with an affidavit saying the court’s decision to initiate the contempt proceedings based on an unsubstantiated and flawed petition, is nothing but “disquieting inclination” by the court to silence criticism and dissent using the power of contempt. The court found Ms. Roy’s statement, which she refused to disavow or apologize for, as criminally contempt and sentenced her to a “symbolic” one day’s imprisonment and fined Roy Rs. 2500 or 3 months additional jail if she fails to pay the fine. Ms. Roy served the jail sentence for a single day. Here her all self proclaimed morality gone with the wind. She opted to pay the fine rather than serve an additional three months’ imprisonment for default. Though she opted to criticize Mahatma Gandhi but never followed him in refusing to pay the fine.

Environmental historian Ramachandra Guha, another controversial writer, has been critical of Roy’s Narmada dam activism. Guha writes that her advocacy is hyperbolic and self-indulgent, “Ms. Roy’s tendency to exaggerate and simplify, her Manichean view of the world, and her shrill hectoring tone, have given a bad name to environmental analysis“. He faults Ms. Roy’s criticism of Supreme Court judges who were hearing a petition brought by the Narmada Bachao Andolan as careless and irresponsible.

Roy counters that her writing is intentional in its passionate, hysterical tone: “I am hysterical. I’m screaming from the bloody rooftops. And he and his smug little club are going ‘Shhhh… you’ll wake the neighbours!’ I want to wake the neighbours, that’s my whole point. I want everybody to open their eyes.

Not to be undone here only, Ms. Roy connected November 2008 Mumbai attacks with the Indian region’s history and society such as widespread poverty, the Partition of India, the atrocities committed during the 2002 Gujarat violence, and the ongoing conflict in Kashmir. Ms.Tavleen Singh called Roy’s comments “the latest of her series of hysterical diatribes against India and all things Indian.

Ms. Roy described of the Maoists as “Gandhians”. She has described Naxalites as “patriot of a kind” who are “fighting to implement the Constitution, while the government is vandalizing it”. She criticized Government’s armed actions against the Naxalite-Maoist insurgents in India, calling it “war on the poorest people in the country“. According to her, the Government has “abdicated its responsibility to the people” and launched the offensive against Naxals to aid the corporations with whom it has signed Memorandums of Understanding.

These are only few points out of mentioned above. These points clearly shows her bend of mind. Some may agree with Ms. Roy over some points. At the same may differ too. But her criticism of Mahatma Gandhi over “his efforts to remove untouchability from the society” is totally uncalled for. Even those, who don’t like Gandhi at all, can’t agree with her on this point.

The author of this blog is pained to see “the token of opposition” shown by media & political parties over her criticism of Mahatma Gandhi. I don’t think, our TV News Channels, who start discussion over petty issues, conducted any discussion to condom Ms. Roy over Gandhi issue. At the same time, all political parties, who remain ready to stall parliament over some small issues, too failed to criticize her.

As human being, as Indian, as a responsible members of the society, we have a responsibility to share & stand against all such non-sense. Through this blog “India dares goddess of meanest things, Ms. Arundhati Roy and condemn her with no uncertain terms for her foolish, irresponsible remarks.

  1. Roy is another flame recruited by extremist lobbyists to extinguish any latent talent of thought or authorship budding in her being, a gone case , so to speak. Irreparable, ignore her if none dares consign such anti Indian characters to prison under anti sedition laws.
    Jai hind!

  2. Ma’am You are right. We should give importance to such elements. But we should not drag out feet in condemning such elements too.
